Trip to pinnawala elephant orphanage

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located at Pinnawala village, 13 km northwest of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. There are more than 80 elephants, retired abused or orphaned at this renowned orphanage. The orphanage is a sanctuary for rescued, injured or abused elephants. Visitors from around the world come to see these magnificent animals. There are also some small babies who are born in the herd.

The daily highlight is the walk from the orphanage to the river to bathe the elephants. It's amazing to see an entire herd splashing and rolling in the river, a few feet in front of you!

Pinnawalla is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 37 males and 51 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.

The orphanage is very popular among local and foreign tourists. The main attraction is the opportunity to observe the bathing elephants from the broad river bank as the herd interacts socially, bathing and playing.

The orphanage is open to the public daily, and all admission fees are used to look after the elephants. Visitors to the park can view many different aspects of the care and daily routine of the elephants, such as bottle feeding of elephant calves, feeding of all other elephants, and bathing in the Oya River. Ishanka Madurasinghe was declared Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Universe 2010 during the Miss Sri Lanka finals held in Colombo a short while ago.

Ishanka was among 12 contestants who were selected for the finals held late this evening. The 23 year old Kelaniya University student is pursuing a degree in history.

Her ultimate goal was to represent Sri Lanka internationally at the Miss Universe pageant and she says she is sure the experience she have gained during past pageants as well as in the field of academics will help her better represent her country.
